BY 1969, JIMI HENDRIX HAD COMPLETELY LOST the plot. He'd dumped all the English guys — apart from Mitch Mitchell — who'd been the best friends and collaborators he'd ever had, and replaced them with a bunch of American hangers-on (mostly, but not all, black) who encouraged him to waste his money and his studio time by partying and doping.
