BACK ABOUT 15 years ago, when Pete Townshend was living in New York City putting together the Broadway production of Tommy, I was lucky enough to spend many days and nights drinking my way into oblivion with my hero.  Usually we talked about books and art.  And women.  But once in a while I had the nerve to talk music.
