Jimi Hendrix: South Saturn Delta
Charles Shaar Murray, MOJO, December 1997
IN WHICH the new management of Planet Hendrix takes its first steps into the marginal, semi-canonical hinterlands of the Great Man's recorded legacy and returns with 65-or-so minutes' worth of rare Jimi groove. What you get: some stuff rescued from various semi-dodgy posthumous albums, including the likes of War Heroes, Loose Ends and the never-released-on-CD Rainbow Bridge album (not to mention the now-deleted, blink-and-you-missed-it Voodoo Soup); some alternate mixes of familiar tracks, alongside restorations of pieces previously disfigured by the ancien regime's questionable overdubs and edits; and a few performances disinterred from the vaults for the very first time, plus several items salvaged from what might have been the fourth Experience album if they hadn't broken up in 1969.
So: bees' knees, cats' pyjamas or simply your father's moustache?
Total word count of piece: 469
