Janet Jackson: Into Control, Out Of Tunes

John McCready, The Face, October 1990

JANET JACKSON'S last single, 'Black Cat', was truly mind boggling in its awfulness. Its politely heavy metal styling was really just an excuse for Janet to look meaner than a Lewis leather as she spun herself sick in the accompanying video/stage show. It's pop music, and pop music can be anything that allows the artist to strike a pose. But is it also the sound of the record industry scraping the Jackson barrel? It's crap, a long way from anything on the classic Control set that made Janet an item on our carefully chosen menu.
