James "Blood" Ulmer: Knitting Factory, New York; John Zorn: Puck Building, New York NY

Nick Hasted, New Musical Express, 27 January 1990

IF THE Who were Prince's band at the apocalypse, they would make this noise. It's an almost psychedelic, thumping mash. The drummer is driven by the bassist, whose clockwork picking never stops. At the centre stands Blood Ulmer. Huge, topped by dreads, he has a guitar like a shotgun. He looks down as he lazily plucks it. His biggest move is a slow smile. He's the anti-Hendrix, pulling sinuous bursts with minimal movement.
