James "Blood" Ulmer, Chico Freeman: Camden Jazz Week, the Roundhouse, London
Richard Williams, The Times, 3 November 1980
JAMES "BLOOD" Ulmer put the cat among the pigeons with gratifying forthrightness at the Camden Jazz Week on Friday evening. An American guitarist who appeared with Ornette Coleman's first electric band during the 1970s and whose notoriety is growing apace, Ulmer has worked from Coleman's premises to develop a music more likely to appeal to new-wave rockers than to the traditional sort of jazz fan, and the resulting controversy promises to be stimulating.
