Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan: Shepherd's Bush Empire, London

Ian Watson, Yahoo! Music, January 2007

AT TIMES, it's like spying on a first date. She's blond, Scottish, nervous, terminally shy, deals with her jitters by keeping totally silent for twenty minutes, and then bursting into sudden fits of the giggles accompanied by random comments about nothing in particular ("Maybe I should be sweeping the stage," she announces laughing, at one point.) He's dark, American, moody, terminally shy, deals with his jitters by saying nothing at all for the entire evening, and disappearing offstage for four songs or so about ten minutes into the set. They've been emailing for months, of course, but now they've finally come face to face, it's a whole different story.
