Remembering John Leyton

Kieron Tyler, Sanctuary Records, February 2002

ONCE HEARD, 'Johnny Remember Me' is never forgotten. It was atmosphere itself, the first time British pop had distilled the essence of drama onto vinyl. From the opening sigh of a wordless vocal to the combination of John Leyton's urgent, emotive singing, the galloping rhythmic chase of the backing track and the heavenly choir, this eerie song was obviously something special.
