Psych-Out

Barney Hoskyns, Uncut, 2004

SUSAN (The Trip) Strasberg is a deaf Carole Chaplin döppelganger at large in Haight-Ashbury in this hilariously inept 1968 "look" at the counterculture. Jack Nicholson, I kid ya not, is guitarist Stoney, beneficiary of lines such as "it don’t sound so good without acid". (Hey, it don’t look so good without acid either.) Strasberg is searching for The Seeker, aka her big brother Steve (Bruce Bern in a fright wig). Dean Stockwell, in a Navajo headband, intones Manson-esque platitudes about "head games". The Strawberry Alarm Schlock sing ‘Incense and Peppermints’ and Sky Saxon plays in the park. It’s that good, and that bad.
