Hothouse Flowers: Savoy, Limerick

Sean O'Hagan, New Musical Express, 29 August 1987

THE HOTHOUSE Flowers kinda live up to their name, burning bright one minute, descending into shiny plastic showbiz the next. The first thing they should do is forget the idea of ENTERTAINMENT and go for the idea of CONFRONTATION. When they're hot, they're messed up, rambling, romantic and teetering on the edge of melodrama. When they're entertaining, they come off like showband-tainted tack — all rock n' roll rifferama and playing down to the crowd. Sod it, lads, you just don't need it.
