Genesis: Invisible Touch (Virgin GENLP2); The Smiths: The Queen Is Dead (Rough Trade 96)
Simon Frith, The Observer, 15 June 1986
I KNOW there are hundreds of thousands of people out there (most of them Observer readers) who took forward to a new Genesis LP, but for me their records still come off the production line too sleekly — they're always reliable, beautifully finished, smooth runners. Genesis are, in short, just a vehicle these days for Phil Collins's white soul, and even on the best tracks here he can't match the master of this genre, George Michael.
