Garth Brooks: Garth Brooks in the Life of Chris Gaines (Capitol)

Eric Weisbard, Spin, November 1999

WHEN GARTH Brooks dressed up like someone else the first time, to play the role of the wife-battering husband in the GMT- and TNN-banned 'Thunder Rolls' video, it was a brave, risky, and surprising (if still self-conscious and Madonna-ish) move. When Garth Brooks makes himself up as if he wants to be Iggy Pop's dog and issues a lite-rock concept album of the greatest hits of "Chris Gaines," building hype for The Lamb, a One Trick Pony-type film about the character that will come out next year and have its own soundtrack album, he's only aching to break the 100-million-albums barrier.
