Four Patterns of Love
Geoffrey Cannon, The Guardian, 7 January 1969
Update, 2019. Forty years ago leading BBC tv Radio DJ Paul Gambaccini organised Critic's Choice: Top 200 Albums, in which 47 rock music writers including Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Chet Flippo, Charlie Gillett, Lenny Kaye, Greil Marcus, Robert Shelton, Richard Williams — and me — chose their Top Ten, from which the Top 200 were computed. The Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones predictably dominated the first 10 of the 200. However, two writers, Bob Harris and Penny Valentine, placed Forever Changes by the Los Angeles band Love as their #1, and it was my #5. Consequently it was overall #16.
