Fiddling While the Old Barriers Burn

WHEN THE cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the bassist Edgar Meyer and the violinist Mark O'Connor take the stage on Wednesday at Avery Fisher Hall to play selections from their best-selling album, Appalachia Waltz, and its new sequel, Appalachian Journey, most eyes will be on Mr. Ma. The trio's celebrity, its meal ticket, he is a classical-music superstar, perhaps the greatest string player of our time. But he's not as remarkable a musician as his ensemble-mate on violin.
