JOACHIM COODER was four years old when he decided he wanted to be a drummer, after watching his father, Ry, and drummer Jim Keltner record Cooder's 1982 The Slide Area. The album was one in a series of Cooder's eclectic rock records from the Seventies and Eighties, including such masterpieces as Paradise and Lunch and Chicken Skin Music, as well as soundtracks for films like Tony Richardson's The Border and Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas. In the Nineties, Cooder has largely put aside rock and blues in favor of world-music projects — most strikingly, 1997's beautiful collaboration with veteran Cuban musicians, Buena Vista Social Club.
