IT IS EASY to forget that pop, nowadays, has become an organic process. The music industry is still mostly in the hands of people whose years of growth were in the bygone era of the star system, when pop was a mere series of passing fads, with passive audiences responding to the dictates of performers like well-drilled ranks at a Nuremberg rally.
