ONE OF the hallmarks of a great regional record label is the ability to define a time and place in the mind's ear. Think of postwar Chicago blues and Chess springs to mind. East Coast hard bop was stylishly delineated by Blue Note. Pacific Jazz and Contemporary owned West Coast cool jazz.
