Elvis's first love: The King and I

THE NIGHT before I met June Juanico, the woman Elvis Presley nearly married in 1957, I got talking to a man named Bayard in a bar in Oxford, Mississippi. A small, pretty hill town, Oxford is almost equidistant from the two great holy temples of Elvis — about an hour and a half's drive south from Graceland, the mausoleum on Elvis Presley Boulevard (a name it was given during his life), and an hour due west of the shotgun shack on Kelly Street, East Tupelo, in which Elvis was born.
