Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson: 100 Club, London

Brian Case, Melody Maker, 16 June 1979

CLEANHEAD MAY have lost his hair, but whisps of Charlie's Wig cluster about his alto. In fact, everything about his performance preserves the flavour of the mid-Forties melting-pot when swing, bebop and R&B found themselves cheek-by-jowl. Cleanhead's heritage is as rich as Byzantium, and predates the scuttling of the pontoon bridges.
