Drug Culture As Pop Culture
David Toop, Mixmag, June 1992
WHEN PHUTURE'S 'Acid Tracks' hit the decks in 1987, the title of this minimalist techno-homage to the Roland TR-303 blinded most of us to the facts. Perhaps the world was just hanging around, waiting for a new utopian convergence of drugs and music to match the semi-mythical "turn on, tune in, drop out" hippie ethos. Here was a 12 inch single from Chicago which just might be the prototype soundtrack for the new cyber frontier of technology, trance, dance and mind expansion.
