Dire Straits: On Every Street (Vertigo/All formats)

Stuart Maconie, New Musical Express, 14 September 1991

SO HERE it is, Slowdive fans, the most important LP ever made. If you see what I mean. It is six years since the last 'proper' Dire Straits album, a little thing called Brothers In Arms. As well as inventing the CD to all intents and purposes, Brothers In Arms sold so many copies that there isn't yet a number big enough to express it. A whole generation, a whole culture, an entire marketing concept, indeed the whole notion of what rock in the '80s and '90s might mean was formed by this collection of songs. It was rubbish but it did have a nice picture of a Dobro guitar on the front.
