MANY'S THE time that contemporary pop record producers have been compared, in function and power, to film directors. There are, of course, many different kinds of record producers, with as many differing attitudes to their role, but nowhere has the record business so resembled the "golden years" of Hollywood as in its treatment of a bunch of female singers, mostly black, who came to prominence in the Sixties.
