Denise LaSalle: Doin' it Right

Tony Cummings, Black Music, December 1974

DENISE LASALLE is a mass of contradictions. She prefers her music "mean, down-home and funky" but would "like to do a session in Philadelphia". She admits the "rawness" of her past hits in the States has stopped much pop crossover yet she's anxious to "break through in Europe". Even her self-composed songs are contradictory: traditionally passive ('Heartbreaker Of The Year') one moment, swaggeringly threatening ('Breaking Up Somebody's Home') the next.
