David Bowie: Milton Keynes Bowl, Buckinghamshire

Mary Harron, The Guardian, 4 July 1983

THE BRITISH phase of the Serious Moonlight tour ended in a grassy amphitheatre where a crowd of 50,000 strained to see a little white figure moving across the stage. The scale made it an appropriate finale for the last rock superstar, but apart from those few moments where guitarist Earl Slick did his Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock bit, this was not like a rock event. A screen suspended above the stage gave a simultaneous transmission of Bowie's performance, so it seemed we were watching the televised version of the most elegant Las Vegas act in history.
