HE DIDN'T LOOK like one of rock 'n' roll's crucial stars. Small, wiry, nervous even. The spotty face on the cover of his first album had tanned and wrinkled: it might have suffered casualties more important than acne. We talked of how much we loved those old Checker singles and wasn't a Dale Hawkins revival what the world needed most.
