Circle Jerks: Group Sex (Frontier)

Byron Coley, New York Rocker, March 1981

ONE OF THE real top great beauties of Anglo punk, the early, was that there was never a lyric sheet. Singers sang breakneck as they pleased and lyrical interp (literal) was left to the foolhardy listener. Info glut CA.-style punk bands, the late, turn that right around. Even if yr not lookin' for lyrics, you get 'em. Often this has been done to show the band's street savy (X, Flesh Eaters, etc.), but in the case of the Circle Jerks, rote use of form works against peepheads.
