Chickasaw Mudd Puppies: 8 Track Stomp (Wing)

Max Bell, Vox, April 1991

WE'VE GOT a weird one here. The Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, for those who don't know, take their name from a river running through Alabama, though they hail from Athens, Georgia — R.E.M. country. Their debut EP White Dirt was produced by Michael Stipe, who is also credited with partial control on 8 Track Stomp. This is a wild and often wonderfully inventive grab-bag of rural Americana, spanning a broad spectrum of styles, from Skip James-flavoured blues to feverish Appalachian Country. You can practically smell these songs, and a pungent bunch they are.
