FUNK ALWAYS has its conventions, routines and common signals. The difference between great funk and bad is in how they are applied. Funk needs a warmth of shared motion, a flash of humour, satire, wit. It needs both a hard cutting edge and a soft smile. That relentless, mindless, must-party-now determination many funk-soul groups purvey usually turns against itself and becomes grimly unpleasurable.
