Candi Staton

John Abbey, Blues & Soul, June 1976

WITH THE greatest respect in the world to the delightful Candi Staton, I would have taken virtually any odds against ever seeing her sitting on top of the British charts. I honestly never expected Britain to progress to the point where someone of Candi's rather specialised talent would attain mass acceptance over here – and she's done it by only offering a little ground because though 'Young Hearts Run Free' has definite disco appeal, it's no more obviously commercial than many records in her past.
