In 1971, when Bryan Ferry flew into the pop arena from nowhere, an unheard-of outsider with no musical pedigree to speak of, very few people thought he would survive longer than it would take his first album, Roxy Music, to sink without a trace. When the album, as stunning visually as it was musically, reached six in the chart, the success was chalked up as a profitable hype.
