"JAZZ IS the teacher", runs an aphorism recently coined by the avant-garde guitarist James Ulmer, "and funk is the preacher". What he meant was that while young black American musicians continue to respect the jazz tradition, many of them feel the need to communicate with large numbers of people through the medium of dance music.
