Britt Daniel: The Borderline, London
Nick Hasted, Uncut, March 2002
Spoon's Girls Can Tell was near to being last year's best album. It compressed new wave melodies and twitching post-punk rhythms into songs of pristine craft, with production so loaded, clean and sharp it hit like a pop proscribed substance. It's given the Texan band sudden US success, four LPs into a decade-long, stuttering career, but they still can't afford to fly their full cutlery set to London, compromising with a visit from their singer/songwriter/leader, Britt Daniel. I'm still confidently expecting a pop masterclass but. as Daniel's songs attest, life often disappoints.
