Blue Öyster Cult: Spectres (Columbia)

Richard Riegel, Creem, January 1978

THE BLUE Öyster Cult have been able, in the past few years, to abandon their critic-induced anxieties about striving on as the vanguards of N.Y. Rock or of intellectuo-metal or whatever, and to get on with capturing the lay fans stacked up by the radios and at the record counters. Ergo, last season's "democratic" LP, Agents of Fortune, and the resultant hit single, 'Don't Fear the Reaper', two of the Cult's biggest popular successes ever. Proving, perhaps, that ex-Nazis do make the best postwar economic recovery.
