Black Flag's Private War

Mark Leviton, BAM, 29 March 1985

LOS ANGELES — Henry Rollins simply will not look at me. The Black Flag vocalist has been described as everything from Jim Morrison with Charlie Manson's eyes to a classic stick-in-the-mud loner, but to me he's just the guy who doesn't want to be interviewed on a winter afternoon in 1985. First time I spoke to Black Flag two years ago Henry barely said a word. It's like he'll give up a piece of his soul if he participates in an interview without complaint, and when his eyes do dart my way momentarily it's clear enough he considers me, in the words of one of Black Flag's most cogent songs 'My War', "one of them."

Total word count of piece: 1532
