Bill Laswell

Phil Hardy, Dave Laing, 'Faber Companion to 20th Century Popular Music', 2001

ONE OF THE new breed of record producers of the '80s and '90s, Laswell regards songs as "an old-fashioned primitive format". He is renowned for ignoring stylistic and cultural boundaries in his work. As well as producing artists as diverse as Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto, Herbie Hancock and Fela Kuti, Laswell has recorded his own compositions with avant-garde groups Material and Last Exit.
