"I dream about doing the Beatles," Bill Graham said, hunched over his desk in the crowded office of the Fillmore West. Outside the office, the ballroom — at night a huge hot space of close-packed bodies, blaring rock ‘n’ roll and swirling lights — was empty and bright with afternoon sun; inside, everything was normally hectic — phones ringing and deals being dealt — but for a moment Graham was oblivious.
