THE PIONEER of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, defined the artist's aims as "fame, wealth, power, and the love of women." Though no one has yet found a way of taxing fame and beautiful lovers, a successful artist can at least be relieved of a good deal of his wealth, by means of income tax.
