Aretha Franklin: Apollo Theatre, New York, NY

Dan Nooger, Phonograph Record, April 1974

MUSIC HAS taken its place with dope and women as a reason for coming to Harlem. Especially these bleak days, it's an emotionally regenerative experience to escape from a round of dull white rock groups and press parties and head for the Apollo Theatre on the opening night of the Aretha Franklin Show. Feeling the groove getting stronger as you cross Lexington Avenue and 125th Street going west. Sitting through a movie and some dull comedian in waiting for "Lady Soul."
