Andrae Crouch, Choralerna: Hammersmith Odeon, London

Karl Dallas, Melody Maker, 15 January 1977

ANDRAE CROUCH is a smoother character than the gospel stars who turned our heads around in the Forties and Fifties, his music being as rooted in street funk and even Top Forty chart sounds as it is in the storefront church and call-and-response musical patterns. He had barely been onstage at the Hammersmith Odeon for more than a couple of bars before the entire theatre was literally jumping with joy. He even got them clapping on the offbeat, too, which is more than Black Nativity ever managed in my experience.
