Alison Moyet: Alf (Columbia)

Richard Riegel, Creem, July 1985

THIS ALBUM'S not bad, but it could have been a lot better. Alison Moyet, as you may recall, graced our airwaves back in 1982-83 with her potent blues vocals for Yazoo (or "Yaz," as they were known in the U.S.). Moyet's husky British-mama singing furnished the perfect "human" counterpoint to Vince Clarke's tinkle-burble electronics, and Yazoo were well on their way to the top of our charts when they suddenly split up, allowing the similar-sounding Eurythmics first place by default.
