Alicia Bridges: Alicia Bridges (Polydor Super 2391 364) ****

Garry Bushell, Sounds, 3 February 1979

"IT'S A joke I've learned to live with/Being different from the crowd/They'd like to polish me up/Give me a trim/Water me down/And make me like them... but I'm a diamond in the rough..." So sings Alicia Bridges on 'Diamond In The Rough' with typical self-assurance. And you'd be hardpressed to find a better argument against uniformity than this, her debut album, the pleasantest surprise I've stumbled across since at least yesterday.
