Library Rock's Backpages

Albums from Paul McCartney, Little Richard and Carole King

Geoffrey Cannon, The Guardian, 21 May 1971

THERE IS NO way to make great rock music from retirement. Paul McCartney may have been seduced — by reading that he's equalled Schubert — into believing that he can play Sibelius's game. Or he may now only be able to face himself, his wife, and the ram he's seen gripping, inconsequentially, on the cover of his new album, Ram, which is released today (Apple PAS 10003). He's quick with skills and graces which more substantial musicians have reason to envy. It's easy to see why he admired and patronised the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band in their early days.
