After Punk, What? The Velvet Underground

THOSE MUSIC-business "pundits" have often repeated the claim that a music-industry phenomenon rears its head every ten years — you know, Elvis in '54, the Beatles in '64, and so on. Unfortunately for the theoreticians, the '74 phenom failed to materialize — or did it? On one hand, we had DISCO, which was certainly a music-business phenomenon; on the other hand, we had the NYC punk/new wave scene, which was also certainly a legitimate phenomenon, though not at the cash register.
