IN THE WORLD of independent record labels, Rough Trade is a bona fide living legend. Born in the late '70s from the West London record shop of the same name, it embraced punk's DIY ethos and spear headed the post-punk and art rock revolutions which followed. Then, in 1983, in the first of many master-strokes which would define Rough Trade as a true cultural icon, it gave the world the Smiths.
