The Doctor and the Duke: A Night with Mac Rebennack
Mick Brown, Daily Telegraph, 17 July 1999
ON A WARM Saturday afternoon, in a studio just off 5th Avenue, in the downtown section of New York, Dr John is recording an album of Duke Ellington songs. A burly man in his late 50s, dressed in a pleated bowling shirt and threadbare jeans, a pig-tail protruding from beneath a baseball cap, he sits in a swivel chair in the control-room, meditatively puffing on a cheroot, while the engineer replays a song which he has recorded earlier that week.
