Lowell's retreat from Little Feat
John Swenson, Rolling Stone, 14 July 1977
WASHINGTON DC. — "When we really get going we can play music as complex as Weather Report or Herbie Hancock," Little Feat pianist Bill Payne contends after a set of steaming rock funk at Washington's Warner Theater. "Except that we're coming from a rock basis instead of jazz." This isn't necessarily overstatement, since Payne cowrote Little Feat's dazzling fusion instrumental, 'Day at the Dog Races', on their latest album, Time Loves a Hero. The track is especially meaningful: it clearly indicates the musical direction most of Little Feat favor, and it's the only tune on which lead singer/guitarist Lowell George doesn't play during live shows.
